Cinders
We have been told that Chesapeake is applying cinders to CR-3 and Route 89 at
the rate of 100 tons a week during bad weather. This has made travelling on icy
roads easier. The disadvantage of this heavy application of cinders is apparent
when the ice melts. The picture below shows the dust cloud caused by traffic
over the cinders. The dust cloud is hard on our lungs, cars and homes. It
increases braking distance due to lack of friction. More on cinders can been
